We got a great feedback about the open source middleware for STB: Jet 2.0.
Jet is a environment that can be completely customized in Java language and already run on low-power, highly reliable, highly expandable (with both ethernet and USB ports on board) very affordable DVB set top boxes already available on the market in mass quantities.
Today we announce the public availability of a Jet system development kit (SDK).
The target customers should be enterprises, software houses, broadcasters and public administration ICT services that are looking for a widely open and broadly available platform on top of which develop and deploy services against the digital divide.
Jet middleware can really bootstrap lots of interesting services on a platform that is supposed to be widely available in the citizen households, as the digital switch over of the television service is really going on all over Europe.
The Jet SDK is composed by these components:
- hardware: retail decoder based on PowerPc System on Chip (SOC) with these main features:
- both DVB Sat and terrestrial tuners (cold swapping needed)
- hard disk for persistent storage of media stream and applications (code and data),
- usb 1.1 host port,
- 10/100 Mbps ethernet port
- serial port
- software: Jet 2.0 middleware already installed
- test streams: some transport streams saved on the local disk which showsmain features
- documentation: one user manual and one development manual in a PDF format
- support: username for six month access to reserved trouble ticket system with high priority code
This is all we can offer to let you become quickly productive on a really embedded multimedia interactive environment.
This is your chance to help a business model based on open source really take off. Think about it! No lock in, but real innovation at the right cost.
